The full story
San Diego is easier to plan as a collection of distinct neighborhoods than as one continuous center. Downtown combines the Gaslamp Quarter, waterfront and East Village on a walkable grid. Balboa Park and nearby Hillcrest form another cluster, while Old Town and Mission Valley sit along the San Diego River corridor. Point Loma and Ocean Beach face the ocean and bay; La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Mission Beach create separate coastal zones farther north. Distances between these clusters are often too large for casual walking. Build each half-day around one area and its nearby anchors, then use transit or a car for the next cluster. That approach preserves time for museums, beaches or trails and prevents a map of neighboring labels from disguising the city’s real travel times.
