Why go
This route suits travelers who want the city’s maritime setting as well as a hill walk. Begin at the working harbor, then give the Basque Maritime Museum and Aquarium enough time for their indoor displays. Paseo Nuevo takes you around the seaward edge of the old town before the route climbs Monte Urgull toward La Mota Castle. The climb is the demanding part, and the exposed waterfront can be windy, so keep the outdoor stops flexible. The castle and hill are close but reward separate pauses: one for the summit setting, one for the historic fortification. If the museum visits run long, shorten the harbor pause.
