Why go
Jazzaldia offers a contrast between the close setting of Plaza de la Trinidad and concerts in other parts of the city, including the coast. That range gives one performance a distinct sense of place, whether the appeal is an intimate old-town square or a larger venue near the water.
The full story
Jazzaldia began in 1966 as an international competition for amateur groups. The following year it moved to July, and Plaza de la Trinidad became a central setting. The square's compact size brought listeners close to the performers, while the festival's growing programme later called for larger venues. Concerts have also taken place near Zurriola Beach and Kursaal, giving the event a different atmosphere from its old-town roots. Its history includes appearances by artists such as Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis, but the value of a visit lies in the performance you can actually hear. Some past editions have mixed open-air and indoor concerts, with both free and ticketed events. This range of settings reflects its shift from a compact competition to a citywide music event.
