Why go
Matucana 100 brings contemporary visual art, theater, dance, film and music to a former warehouse setting. That range can make an outing west of the historic center worthwhile, especially when paired with Quinta Normal’s museums or park paths rather than a rushed downtown circuit.
What to look for
- Former warehouse structures frame the contemporary arts spaces.
- Visual art shares the venue with theater, dance, cinema and music.
- Quinta Normal Park lies nearby on the Matucana corridor.
The full story
Matucana 100 opened in 2001 in a part of Santiago associated with rail and storage infrastructure. The site had served as a railcar repair station and later as water-supply warehouses. Its conversion into a cultural center was intended to strengthen an arts corridor between Quinta Normal and the Estación Central area. The old industrial setting is therefore part of the visit, not merely a shell around the work on display. It has hosted contemporary visual art as well as theater, dance, music, photography and cinema. A 2010 earthquake damaged the early-twentieth-century visual arts gallery, which was later repaired. Today the sensible way to approach the venue is through its current program: the buildings explain its character, while the particular exhibition or performance gives you a reason to enter.
Useful to know
- Check the program for the specific gallery or performance you want; their schedules and tickets differ.
- Combine a Matucana 100 event with Quinta Normal only if its timing leaves room for the park or museums.
