Why go
Walk the edges of Praza do Obradoiro instead of looking only at the cathedral. Pazo de Raxoi faces its west front, the former pilgrims’ hospice stands to the north, and the streets beyond lead into the smaller scale of the historic centre. This gives the city a clear shape before you explore farther.
The full story
Praza do Obradoiro is the public face of Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral’s west front marks the arrival point for many Camino pilgrims, while Pazo de Raxoi, the civic building opposite, anchors the other side of the square. The Hostal dos Reis Católicos began as a pilgrims’ hospice under the Catholic Monarchs and now has a different hospitality role. These buildings show how worship, care for travelers and civic authority have long shared this one space. The streets leaving the plaza narrow quickly. A short walk toward Praza da Quintana or Praza das Praterías changes the view of the cathedral and reveals how the old town fits around it. The university adds another long-running institution to this setting. For a first look, use the squares as bearings and save the broader newer streets for transit or services rather than treating them as extensions of the medieval core.
