Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

The cathedral is the Camino’s destination and Santiago’s defining landmark. Its Romanesque interior and varied exterior fronts reward a visit from more than one square.

Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Why go

See the Baroque west front from Praza do Obradoiro, then circle toward the Romanesque Praterías front and Praza da Quintana. Inside, the older stone structure and later decoration tell a different story from the grand arrival façade. The shrine’s religious importance remains central to the visit.

What to look for

  • The Obradoiro façade gives the cathedral its grand western arrival face.
  • The Praterías façade preserves Romanesque sculpture on the south side.
  • The interior retains a Romanesque plan beneath later additions.

The full story

The cathedral grew around a tomb traditionally identified as that of the apostle Saint James. That tradition made Santiago de Compostela the destination of the Camino de Santiago and explains why arrival matters to many pilgrims. The claim about the tomb is a religious tradition, rather than something the architecture can prove. Look at what the building itself shows: the broad Romanesque nave belongs to the medieval pilgrimage church, while later Gothic and Baroque work changed how visitors encounter it. From Praza do Obradoiro, the Baroque façade gives the cathedral its public face. Inside, the older structure and the Pórtico de la Gloria tell another part of its story. The building is both a living place of worship and a place to study centuries of art, so the route through it may depend on services and the particular visit booked.

Useful to know

  • Walk around the cathedral to compare its façades before or after entering.
  • Check current access arrangements for the Pórtico da Gloria or other ticketed areas separately from general cathedral entry.
