Corfu’s Coasts and Mountainous North

Corfu lies close to the Albanian and Greek mainland, with the capital on its eastern side. Mountainous north, rolling middle and lower south give the island more variety than one beach base suggests.

Why go

Use Mount Pantokrator as the landmark for the north and Corfu Town as the urban anchor on the east coast. Paleokastritsa, Kassiopi and the southern shore offer different coastal settings, so choosing an area matters more than collecting beach names.

The full story

Corfu runs roughly north to south along Greece’s northwestern edge. Its northeastern shore faces Albania across a narrow stretch of sea, while the southeastern side looks toward mainland Greece. The island’s northern range rises to Mount Pantokrator. The center is gentler and more rolling; the south is lower. This broad division helps explain why a trip through Corfu can move from steep hills to broad coastal plains. Corfu Town sits on a peninsula on the eastern side, its old harbor and fortresses placed for the sea approaches. The coastline bends around capes, bays and beaches rather than forming one uniform shore. Paleokastritsa and Kassiopi are useful northern reference points; the southern coast offers another setting altogether. A map helps turn those names into sensible day choices instead of an exhausting circuit of the island.
