Why go

The island's granite hills and sparse cover explain its open views and exposed walks. Northern winds helped power the mills above Chora, and the same wind can make north-facing beaches feel very different from south-coast coves such as Platys Gialos or Paranga.

Useful to know

• On windy days, compare beach orientation before setting out; southern coves are generally more sheltered from a north wind.
• Carry water and sun protection for walks across open, rocky ground.
