From the Seattle World / Areas
Ballard
Ballard is a northwestern Seattle neighborhood between the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Shilshole Bay, where locks, maritime activity and a mill-town history shape the area.
Why go
Ballard is a strong choice for understanding Seattle beyond the downtown waterfront. The neighborhood grew around rail access and mills along Salmon Bay, then became closely tied to the Ship Canal and its locks. Today, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, National Nordic Museum and Fishermen's Terminal give a compact route through water, work and immigrant history.
