Pioneer Square
Pioneer Square is a historic downtown district where Seattle's early street layout, rebuilding debates and older commercial fabric provide context for nearby museums and landmarks.
Why go
Go to Pioneer Square to read Seattle's early urban history in a concentrated downtown area. Yesler Way marks an old division between early land claims, while later renewal proposals put the district's historic buildings at risk. The neighborhood now works well as a base for the Klondike site, Smith Tower and Occidental Park, each adding a different layer of context.
What to look for
Pioneer Square's Yesler Way was originally known as Mill Street.
Pioneer Square was a focus of urban-renewal proposals in the 1960s.
