Seattle’s hills and waterways make the city scenic but uneven: Puget Sound lies west, Lake Washington east, and the Ship Canal links the two.
Use water and ridges as orientation tools. Elliott Bay defines downtown’s western edge, while Lake Union and the Ship Canal create natural breaks between central and northern neighborhoods. Hills make seemingly short walks more demanding, especially away from the waterfront, and explain why nearby districts can feel separated.
