Why go
District names become useful once you understand the river. The Bund, Old City, Jing’an and former French Concession are all on the Puxi side, but offer very different walks. Pudong is across the river and works best as its own skyline and museum day.
The full story
The Huangpu River divides Shanghai into Puxi, the older west-bank city, and Pudong, the east-bank development zone. Puxi contains the Bund’s former banking waterfront, the Old City around Yuyuan Garden, and the shikumen lanes and leafy streets associated with the former French Concession. Jing’an follows West Nanjing Road toward its temple and shopping streets. Hongkou holds the former Jewish-refugee district. Pudong concentrates the city’s tallest towers, museums and commercial avenues. Treat these as clusters rather than a checklist. A river crossing changes the rhythm of a day, and large outlying districts such as Minhang need a named anchor, such as Qibao or Hongqiao, before they become useful plans. This district-by-district approach also keeps a visit from becoming a long sequence of unrelated transit rides.
