China Art Museum, Shanghai
China Art Museum pairs modern Chinese art with the monumental red former China Pavilion in Pudong. This is the successor to Shanghai Art Museum, away from its former People’s Square home.
Why go
The building is a reason to come as well as a container for art. Its red “oriental crown” form preserves a major pavilion from Shanghai’s Expo landscape. Inside, displays of modern Chinese art and Shanghai culture give the visit a different focus from the antiquities associated with Shanghai Museum.
What to look for
The former China Pavilion has a red “oriental crown” exterior.
Permanent displays explore modern Chinese art and Shanghai culture.
The multimedia Qingming scroll translates a historic painted cityscape into a moving display.
Useful to know
Plan for the Pudong museum location rather than the former art-museum building beside People’s Square.
Check exhibition details before building the visit around the Qingming scroll or a particular art display.
