Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road connects shopping with a walk through central Shanghai, but its pedestrianized eastern section and longer western stretch offer different routes and should be planned separately.

Nanjing Road

Why go

The eastern section links the Bund with People’s Square through department stores and commercial facades. Continuing west changes the scale of the outing as the road heads toward Jing’an. It works well when you want street life between major sights, with browsing added selectively rather than a full circuit of every shop.

What to look for

  • Nanjing Road East linking the Bund and People’s Square
  • A pedestrianized shopping stretch within the eastern section
  • Nanjing Road West continuing toward Jing’an

Useful to know

  • Decide whether you mean the east pedestrian stretch or the wider road before setting a meeting point.
  • Combine the eastern section with the Bund or People’s Square.
  • Choose a few stores to browse; shop visits can substantially lengthen the street walk.
