From the Shanghai World / Places

The Bund

The Bund pairs a walk through Shanghai’s historic waterfront architecture with views of Pudong’s towers, giving first-time visitors a clear introduction to the city’s two riverbanks.

The Bund

Why go

Former banks, a customs house, a newspaper headquarters and grand hotels line the western bank of the Huangpu. Their different facades reveal the working institutions behind the port’s history. Across the water, Lujiazui supplies a striking change of scale, so the same walk combines architectural detail with the wider city view.

What to look for

  • The former HSBC dome beside the Customs House clock tower
  • Bank, newspaper, club and hotel facades along Zhongshan East First Road
  • The Oriental Pearl and the Pudong tower cluster across the river

Useful to know

  • Alternate river-facing viewpoints with short stops to inspect the historic facades.
  • Use Nanjing Road East as a natural connection to People’s Square.
  • Check individual buildings separately before planning an interior visit.
