Why go
Start with Prasat Thom and the stepped Prang pyramid, then look for the smaller shrines and large stone lingas that give the complex a different scale from Angkor's better-known temples. Koh Ker briefly served as the imperial capital under Jayavarman IV and Harshavarman II, and its linear main sanctuary makes that period's building ambition visible on the ground.
What to look for
- The seven-tiered Prang pyramid rises beside the Prasat Thom sanctuary.
- Prasat Thom follows a linear plan rather than the concentric layout of many Khmer royal temples.
- Smaller shrines hold unusually large stone lingas.
Useful to know
- Set aside a separate excursion from Siem Reap; the complex is too extensive for a brief stop.
- Stay within areas open to visitors: parts of the wider protected area have not been cleared for access.
