Phnom Kulen National Park

Phnom Kulen National Park brings waterfalls, a sacred carved riverbed and religious sites into one mountain outing. The falls change with the season, and the stops need separate planning.

Why go

The park brings together the waterfalls, sacred riverbed carvings on Phnom Kulen and the reclining Buddha at Preah Ang Thom. They show different sides of the mountain's religious landscape, from carved stone to living worship. Choose a manageable set of stops before leaving Siem Reap. Kbal Spean is a separate foothills excursion, not a stop inside this park.

What to look for

  • Sacred carvings in the riverbed form a separate stop on Phnom Kulen.
  • Preah Ang Thom is known for a reclining Buddha carved from sandstone.
  • The park's waterfalls vary with rainfall and season.

The full story

The park lies within Phnom Kulen, where Khmer history and religious practice meet the landscape. The mountain was known as Mahendraparvata in the Angkorian era and is associated with Jayavarman II's early kingship. Later religious sites added further layers to that history. On Phnom Kulen, sacred symbols carved into a riverbed make water part of the religious setting. This mountain stop is distinct from Kbal Spean in the Banteay Srei foothills. Preah Ang Thom centres on a large reclining Buddha carved into sandstone and remains a place of Buddhist worship. The waterfalls offer a different encounter with the mountain's water and forest, with conditions that change through the year. These places are spread across the park rather than contained in one compact monument. Choose a realistic set of stops and check current conditions before the journey.

Useful to know

  • Plan a separate mountain outing and choose specific stops before leaving Siem Reap.
  • Check current access and water conditions; a waterfall visit changes with the season.
  • Plan the carved riverbed, Preah Ang Thom and waterfalls as separate mountain stops.
