Angkor Thom South Gate

Angkor Thom’s South Gate is approached over a causeway lined with devas and asuras pulling a naga. Its sculpted bridge and face tower together stage the entrance to the walled city.

Why go

The bridge sculpture is the defining feature: it turns the approach into a long, ordered scene before the gate tower. Stop before the entrance to take in both sides of the causeway. Walk the approach slowly enough to compare the opposing figures and the naga they hold. Looking up at the face tower completes the transition from causeway to city gate.

What to look for

  • Compare the deva and asura figures on opposite sides.
  • Follow the naga balustrade toward the gate.
  • Look at the faces on the gate tower above the roadway.

Useful to know

  • Use a safe pull-off or designated stopping point; the gate road carries traffic.
  • View the sculpture from the causeway edge rather than stepping into the road.
