Why go
This is the most elevated and sacred part of Angkor Wat, reached from the temple’s inner galleries. Its central tower and upper-level setting give the visit a different scale from the long outer galleries. Moving inward from the long galleries changes the scale of the visit. From the upper sanctuary, read the central tower in relation to the supporting axes and exposed foundation details.
What to look for
- Look toward the central tower from the upper sanctuary.
- Notice the laterite foundation visible in damaged sections.
- Take in the axial galleries that support the central sanctuary.
Useful to know
- Check current access rules before climbing; routes and capacity can change.
- Follow the designated stairway and respect the active sacred setting.
