Why go
The approach gives a clear view of how the monument rises from the surrounding ground. At the upper levels, stone terraces and the large reclining Buddha reveal later changes to the structure. Follow the raised causeway before looking back at the tiers; the western Buddha then shows how the structure was adapted long after its original temple-mountain design.
What to look for
- Walk the elevated causeway toward the temple.
- Notice the steep, tiered profile from the approach.
- Look for the reclining Buddha built into the western side.
Useful to know
- Expect stairs and uneven stone at the upper levels.
- View the temple from the approach if you prefer to avoid the climb.
