East Mebon

East Mebon’s brick towers and corner elephants recall its original position as an island temple in the East Baray. Stone elephants guard its corners above the former reservoir basin.

East Mebon

Why go

The corner sculptures are unusually visible from the upper terraces, while the brick sanctuary towers give the monument a different texture from nearby sandstone temples. Look down from the terraces to understand the raised island setting, then compare the elephants with the brick towers. Their materials and positions make the monument easy to distinguish.

What to look for

  • Find the elephants at the corners of the upper tiers.
  • Look at the brick towers rising above the laterite platform.
  • Consider the temple’s former island setting in the reservoir.

Useful to know

  • Use the stairways carefully when moving between levels.
  • View the corner figures from more than one side of the upper terrace.
