Neak Pean

Neak Pean is a small island shrine reached by a causeway across water, with four surrounding basins completing its distinctive plan.

Neak Pean

Why go

The water-bound layout is the reason to visit: the central shrine sits at the meeting point of the pools. The approach gives a clear view of the temple’s relationship to its reservoir setting. Crossing the causeway first shows the island shrine within its watery setting. At the centre, look across the four basins and inspect the serpent forms that give the site its name.

What to look for

  • Cross the raised causeway toward the central island.
  • Look for the coiled-serpent forms around the shrine.
  • View the four basins from the central approach.

Useful to know

  • Use the designated causeway; the surrounding water is part of the site layout.
  • Check current access to the reservoir approach before travelling.
