Getting around Siena
Siena's historic sights spread across steep hills, so the shortest line on a map may be a tiring walk. Plan routes by terrain, especially beyond the Campo and cathedral.
This guide helps you move between Siena's central sights without treating the old city as flat. Walking links Piazza del Campo and the cathedral, but a direct route to places farther out can drop down one hill and climb another. Drivers also need to plan where to leave a car before entering the historic centre. Check current local transport and access rules for your route.
Useful to know
For longer walks, compare a ridge route with a direct descent and climb between Siena's hills.
If driving, check current restricted-zone rules and parking locations before approaching the centre.
If the hills are a concern, check current local bus routes and stops for the part of the journey you need.
