Armenian Apostolic Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator
Singapore's early Armenian community built this small church near today's museum district; its shaded verandahs and garden reward a slow look.
Why go
The church makes the scale of the Armenian community's contribution visible: a small group raised much of the funding for a permanent place of worship. Notice how broad verandahs and louvred windows adapt the building to Singapore's heat and rain, then look for the memorials in its grounds.
What to look for
Broad verandahs shade the walls and windows.
Timber louvres were designed to admit air while softening the light.
Garden memorials recall the Armenian community.
Useful to know
Allow time for the church grounds as well as the building; the separate Armenian Heritage Gallery requires an appointment.
