Why go
Sentosa lets you build very different days around one island: a shore walk, wartime history at Fort Siloso, or the attractions around Resorts World Sentosa. The strongest visit follows one of those threads rather than trying to cover every beach and venue.
What to look for
- Beaches and coastal paths shape the island’s outdoor side.
- Fort Siloso preserves a military history alongside the resort landscape.
- Resorts World Sentosa gathers major entertainment venues.
The full story
Sentosa was once known as Pulau Blakang Mati, a name carried through earlier maps and local usage. The island later became a leisure destination, yet its military past remains visible at Fort Siloso. This makes the present landscape a sharp contrast: beaches, promenades and large attractions share an island with former coastal defences. The name Sentosa is commonly linked to peace and tranquility in Malay. Rather than trying to resolve every older place-name from historical maps, look at the surviving fort and the modern shore together; they show how the island’s role in Singapore changed. The shift also explains why an island visit needs a choice of focus. A fort visit follows the former strategic coast, while the beaches and resort precinct show the later leisure landscape.
Useful to know
- Choose a beach, heritage or attraction focus before selecting your arrival point.
- Check each venue’s access and ticket rules separately from island entry.
