Why go
Regaleira is rewarding for visitors who want to explore an estate as a connected composition. The palace is only one element; the chapel, lakes, fountains, grottoes and wells give the grounds their distinctive sequence of discoveries. Taking time for the garden reveals more than a quick view of the building.
The full story
Quinta da Regaleira is an estate near the historic centre of Sintra and part of the wider Cultural Landscape of Sintra recognised by UNESCO. Its best-known former owner was António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, whose nickname, “Monteiro the Millionaire,” also became associated with the palace. The estate combines a Romantic palace, a chapel and a substantial park. Lakes, grottoes, wells, benches and fountains appear throughout the grounds. Taken together, these features make the estate more than a single architectural stop: movement through the garden is part of how it is understood. The wells and grottoes invite close looking, while the palace and chapel establish the built centre of the property. A visit that concentrates only on the façade misses much of its character. The visible form of each feature offers a sound starting point before considering symbolic interpretations.
