Palace of Monserrate
An eclectic nineteenth-century palace combines Indian and Moorish motifs beside one of Sintra’s most botanical gardens. Its ornate rooms deserve time alongside the botanical park.
Look closely at the ornate corridors and domed spaces, then connect the architecture to Francis Cook’s wider landscape project. The palace is an indoor anchor on a Monserrate visit; the park deserves its own walking time. The Indian and Moorish motifs distinguish its architecture from other Sintra estates.
What to look for
Domed rooms and ornate corridors reward close looking.
Useful to know
Give the palace interior and park separate walking time.
