Why go
Lake Bled and the Soča Valley point toward the Julian Alps; Postojna and Škocjan toward limestone country; Piran toward the Adriatic. Farther east, Styria’s white wines and pumpkin seed oil contrast with Prekmurje’s bujta repa and layered gibanica pastry. These regional differences help you choose a focus beyond Ljubljana.
The full story
Mount Triglav stands near the middle of the national park that bears its name. Valleys spread outward from it, feeding the Soča and Sava river systems. One drains toward the Adriatic and the other toward the Black Sea, giving the Alpine landscape a connection far beyond Slovenia. The country’s smaller settlements offer another way to explore regional character. Ptuj, Škofja Loka and Piran have medieval townscapes, while Štanjel, Vipavski Križ and Šmartno belong to a tradition of fortified western villages. On the coast, Piran’s Venetian Gothic architecture differs from the old centre of the port of Koper and the resort setting of Portorož. Inland, rural areas including Kras, Inner Carniola and Lower Carniola provide settings for walking, cycling and horse riding. Choose among these contrasts rather than expecting every region to offer the same experience.
