Languages, Communities and Migration
Slovene is the national language, but Slovenia’s communities reflect borderland histories and migration within former Yugoslavia. This cultural background helps explain the variety of languages and identities encountered in its towns.
Italian and Hungarian minorities have constitutional protection, while Roma communities have a distinct place in the country’s social history. Migration from other Yugoslav republics, especially from the 1960s to the 1980s, also shaped urban Slovenia. Ljubljana, Maribor, Celje and Kranj offer a different settlement context from the more rural regions.
What to look for
Slovene belongs to the South Slavic language group.
Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin reflect migration within former Yugoslavia.
Slovenia’s Jewish history includes a community in Ljubljana and losses during the Holocaust.
