Reading menus in Slovenia
Slovenian menus bring together Alpine, Italian, Hungarian and Balkan influences. A few food and drink terms help you distinguish traditional dishes, familiar staples and the coffee you want to order.
Look for ajdovi žganci for a buckwheat dish, or žlikrofi for potato dumplings associated with Idrija. Štruklji can have sweet, meat or vegetable fillings, so the name alone does not identify the contents. Kraški pršut is air-dried ham; potica is a rolled cake made with nuts or other fillings.
What to look for
Kava usually means espresso; kava z mlekom is coffee with milk.
Kava s smetano is coffee with whipped cream; čaj means tea.
On menus, ribe means fish, testenine means pasta and rižota means risotto.
