What to see and do in Slovenia
Slovenia offers distinct choices between Alpine lakes and rivers, Karst caves, coastal towns and eastern spas. Pick the landscapes and activities that interest you before trying to cover the whole country.
Bled combines a lake and island, while Pokljuka provides a starting point for hikes into the Julian Alps. The Soča and Trenta valley offer a river landscape; Postojna and Škocjan reveal the country underground. Ljubljana and Piran bring contrasting architectural influences into the trip, with Austrian and Italian connections visible in their streets.
What to look for
The Julian Alps support hiking, mountain biking, rafting and kayaking.
Piran and Portorož offer access to the Adriatic coast and seafood.
Eastern Slovenia adds spa stays to the choice of outdoor and urban visits.
Useful to know
Combine Piran with the nearby Sečovlje salt works for a contrast between coastal streets and salt-making landscapes.
