Where Slovenia’s Rivers Lead
Although Slovenia touches the Adriatic, most of its rivers belong to the Black Sea drainage basin. The river map reveals a different geography from the short coastline and nearby Mediterranean landscapes.
The Mura, Drava and Sava basins, including the Kolpa, organize much of inland Slovenia. A smaller part of the country drains toward the Adriatic. Following these basin names helps you understand connections between valleys and why proximity to the coast does not determine where a river flows.
What to look for
The Mura, Drava and Sava form major inland river basins.
The Kolpa belongs to the wider Sava basin.
A smaller western drainage area leads toward the Adriatic.
