Novo mesto
Novo mesto’s old centre sits inside a bend of the Krka, with arcaded Glavni trg at its heart. Visit for the relationship between a trading town, church towers and river landscape.
The square’s covered walkways preserve the character of a trading centre in Lower Carniola, while the Krka gives the town its distinctive shape. Town rights date to Rudolf IV in 1365, but local history reaches much further back: important Early Iron Age finds include the decorated vessels known as situlas.
What to look for
Glavni trg combines arcaded walkways with the Kette Fountain.
The towers of St Nicholas and St Leonard mark the old centre.
The Krka meander frames the Franciscan monastery skyline.
