From the South Africa World / Areas
Drakensberg
The Drakensberg is a long escarpment, not a single mountain stop. Its cliffs, high plateau edges and river valleys span several regions, so the right base depends on which landscape you want to see.
Why go
The northern Amphitheatre, KwaZulu-Natal's high mountain country and Mpumalanga's Blyde River Canyon show very different faces of the same great escarpment. Pick one section for a short trip; crossing between them takes far more commitment than moving between viewpoints within one park.
What to look for
The Amphitheatre's great cliff wall in the northern Drakensberg.
The plateau edge along the Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal border.
Blyde River Canyon farther north in Mpumalanga.
Useful to know
Choose a specific Drakensberg region before selecting walks or accommodation.
Build in flexibility for fast-changing conditions in exposed mountain areas.
