Getting around South Africa
South Africa's long distances often make flying useful between major centres and driving useful within a region. Decide the transport mix around your chosen coast, city or park rather than one national loop.
Why go
A trip linking Cape Town, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal works differently from a focused Garden Route drive. Domestic air links can bridge the large gaps, while a vehicle gives flexibility for dispersed viewpoints and reserves. Road distances are signed in kilometres and traffic keeps to the left.
Useful to know
Use flights for far-apart regions, then plan local transport for the places you actually want to visit.
If hiring a car, confirm its suitability and rental terms before including unpaved park or rural roads.
Allow more time than the map suggests when a route includes wildlife viewing or multiple scenic stops.
