Shopping and Money in Spain
Spain uses the euro, so visitors arriving from elsewhere in the euro area can spend the same notes and coins. For other travelers, paying in euros keeps everyday purchases simpler.
The useful distinction is between the currency you carry and the one a seller charges. Euro coins from any euro-area country work in Spain, even when their national designs differ. For a market purchase in Barcelona or a stop in a smaller town, bring a card and some smaller euro notes rather than relying on foreign cash or a large banknote.
Useful to know
Pay in euros; do not assume shops will accept another currency.
Keep smaller euro notes or coins for modest purchases, since a large banknote may be difficult to use.
Carry a card as well as some cash for places where one payment method is inconvenient.
