The full story
Taxis are useful for luggage, late arrivals and journeys that require several public-transport changes, but Stockholm’s deregulated market makes the choice of vehicle important. Do not assume that two cars at the same rank charge comparable rates. Use an established booking channel or inspect the vehicle’s required price information before entering, then ask for an estimated or fixed total for the exact destination. At an airport or terminal, use the official taxi area rather than accepting an unsolicited ride. Keep the receipt and confirm that card payment is available before setting off if you are not carrying Swedish currency. A taxi rarely improves a compact Gamla Stan visit because access is constrained and walking distances are short; it is more valuable between a hotel and a distant terminal, or after evening transport thins out. Traffic can erase the advantage at commuter hours, so compare the official public-transport journey before booking. For airport transfers, verify the current terminal, meeting point and quoted fare directly with the operator.
