Rosheim

Rosheim's Romanesque church, early stone house and medieval gates make a compact study of older Alsace. Its appeal lies in masonry and town defences as much as timber framing.

Rosheim

Why go

The Maison romane and Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church give Rosheim a rare, coherent Romanesque focus. Walking on to the surviving gates and ramparts shows how the settlement later protected itself. It suits an excursion built around close looking at buildings rather than a packed museum schedule.

What to look for

  • The stone exterior of the Maison romane, also called Maison païenne
  • Romanesque forms at Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church
  • Surviving medieval gates and stretches of rampart

The full story

Rosheim stands on the eastern side of the Vosges and appears on both the Alsace wine route and the region's Romanesque route. The latter tells you what to look for first. Saints-Pierre-et-Paul church and the Maison romane preserve a stone-built heritage that sets Rosheim apart from towns known chiefly for later timber-framed streets. The house is also called the Maison païenne, or 'pagan house', a traditional name rather than a description of its purpose. Around these buildings, fortified gates and ramparts show the town's medieval boundaries. Rosheim later belonged to the group of Alsatian Imperial Cities known as the Décapole, making its defences more than decorative remnants. A walk between house, church and gates lets you see those histories together: early Romanesque construction, a defended town and a place with a distinct civic past. The street views carry the visit even when individual buildings are not open.

Useful to know

  • Plan a public-street circuit linking the Romanesque buildings with the gates.
  • Check any interior access separately; the exterior walk does not depend on entering the buildings.
  • Verify the dated train and station-to-centre connection before setting out.
