Why go
Think of a broad fairground experience rather than a festival devoted only to beer. The fruit column is its distinctive symbol, while rides and stalls provide other reasons to visit. Understanding the difference between the Volksfest event and the Wasen site also prevents confusion with the separate spring festival.
The full story
The name Wasen can refer to the Cannstatter Volksfest, but it is also the name of the fairground where the event takes place. That distinction matters: the site in Bad Cannstatt hosts a separate spring festival as well as the autumn Volksfest. Arriving at the fairground at another time does not mean finding the same event. Beer tents are one part of the Volksfest’s character. Carousels, roller coasters, other fairground rides, food stalls and market stands make it an autumn fair with several different attractions. Its fruit column, a wooden pillar decorated with fruit, provides a recognisable symbol beyond the rides themselves. For planning, keep the festival separate from a general visit to Bad Cannstatt or the Neckar. The event supplies the attractions; the Wasen supplies their setting. Check the official programme for the edition you intend to visit, as individual rides and arrangements can change.
