Why go
A football visit puts you inside a different part of Stuttgart's identity from its museums and palaces. Arena tours can connect the spectator stands with spaces used by players and the press. The programme matters: the rooms and pitch-side areas included depend on the tour and event arrangements.
What to look for
- The stadium’s membrane roof hangs from a surrounding steel frame.
- On the matchday tour, you can see the Cannstatter Kurve and hospitality areas.
- The published arena-tour programme includes the player tunnel and pitch edge.
The full story
The stadium has carried several names, which can make older references confusing. It was known as Neckarstadion before 1993, then Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, and later Mercedes-Benz Arena. MHP Arena Stuttgart is the current name for the same football venue. Those earlier names connect the site both to the nearby Neckar and to Stuttgart's automotive history. Its roof is another link with an earlier phase. Added for the refurbishment preceding the 1993 World Athletics Championships, it uses membranes suspended from a steel frame around the stadium. Looking up reveals a structure quite different from a conventional solid roof. The subsequent conversion towards a football arena changed the relationship between stands and pitch. The building therefore carries traces of different sporting uses, even though VfB football now gives a visit its clearest focus.
