Why go

A museum day can follow a clear theme. Kumu in Kadriorg gives the broadest introduction to Estonian art in this group, while Kadriorg Palace turns toward European and Russian collections. Back in the Old Town, Niguliste's medieval art belongs to a former church; a theatre or music performance can extend the visit into the evening.

The full story

Tallinn's art museums span different settings and periods. Kumu, in Kadriorg, brings Estonian art together in a purpose-built museum. Nearby Kadriorg Palace is associated with European and Russian painting and sculpture, while the Mikkel Museum presents a separate collection. In the Old Town, Niguliste occupies St Nicholas' Church and focuses on medieval art, connecting the works to the city that once surrounded them. Smaller museums devoted to artists such as Adamson-Eric add another way into Estonian visual culture. Performance has its own geography. The National Opera Estonia and Eesti Draamateater represent major stages, while Tallinna Linnateater uses a complex of medieval buildings. Tallinn has also been a setting for music history: a 1967 jazz festival featured the Charles Lloyd Quartet during a brief Soviet-era opening, and the city hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2002. For a limited day, the strongest contrast is between Kumu's national collection and Niguliste's medieval setting. Choose a performance separately after checking the current programme; the venue and production will shape the experience more than the city's old festival record.

Useful to know

  • Pair Kumu with Kadriorg Palace for contrasting art collections in the same district.
  • Choose Niguliste for medieval art in an Old Town church setting.
  • Check current programmes if you want to add opera, theatre or music.
