Use the Old Town for a walk through medieval streets, Kadriorg for art and gardens, or Pirita for Tallinn's coastal landscape.

Why go

Tallinn rewards choosing an area rather than treating every landmark as one compact cluster. The Lower Town and Toompea make a natural first walk; Kadriorg pairs a palace landscape with Kumu's Estonian art. Pirita shifts the focus to the coast, while Rocca al Mare's Open Air Museum tells a rural story west of the centre.

The full story

The Old Town has two useful parts. In the Lower Town, Raekoja plats, the Town Hall Square, is surrounded by streets, churches and remnants of the defensive wall. Climb to Toompea and the emphasis changes: the castle is associated with state power, and the hill also holds Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St Mary's Cathedral. Seeing both areas in one walk shows how the trading town and the fortified upper town related to each other. Kadriorg offers a different day. The palace and its surrounding gardens lead into a district where Kumu presents Estonian art. It suits visitors who want a museum visit with time outdoors, away from the tighter streets of Vanalinn, the Old Town. Farther along the coast, Pirita has the remains of its convent and a marina linked to the 1980 Olympic sailing events; the botanical gardens and TV tower lie inland. To the west, the Estonian Open Air Museum at Rocca al Mare brings together rural buildings and village settings. Pairing it with another distant district can stretch a day, so let one area set the pace before adding a cross-city visit.

Useful to know

  • Walk the Lower Town and Toompea together for the clearest first orientation.
  • Give Kadriorg, Pirita or Rocca al Mare a separate block of time beyond the Old Town.
