Kesklinn and Toompea
Tallinn's central district links the civic streets below with Toompea, the limestone hill of castles, churches and viewpoints. Its upper and lower levels are worth reading together.
On Toompea, the castle complex, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St Mary's Cathedral stand close enough to compare contrasting layers of rule and worship. The hilltop viewpoints then show how the walled Old Town meets the port and modern city. This is a strong area for a history-led walk with several outdoor pauses.
