Tallinn Beyond the Old Town

Just outside the medieval core, Freedom Square, Rotermann Quarter and the waterfront show three different chapters of Tallinn's civic and architectural history.

Why go

Freedom Square brings the War of Independence memorial into view; Rotermann reuses nineteenth- and twentieth-century industrial fabric between the centre and port. Linnahall adds a large Soviet-era structure connected to the 1980 Olympic sailing events. Together they make a useful extension once the Old Town's medieval story is clear.

What to look for

  • Freedom Square's Victory Column and St John's Church
  • Rotermann's older industrial buildings beside newer construction
  • Linnahall's monumental exterior by the waterfront

Useful to know

  • Treat these as separate stops rather than one enclosed district.
  • Check current access before making plans for Linnahall or museum interiors.
