Tallinn Song Festival Grounds

The Song Festival Grounds are a civic landmark as well as an event venue. The great Singing Arc and hillside views make sense even between festivals.

Why go

This is where Tallinn's song festival tradition and the Singing Revolution become a place you can actually walk through. See the arc built for massed choirs, the monument to composer Gustav Ernesaks, and the view toward Tallinn Bay from the hillside.

What to look for

  • The sweeping Singing Arc was designed for a huge choir.
  • A monument honors composer Gustav Ernesaks.
  • The Aste pavilion looks out toward Tallinn Bay.

The full story

Estonia's song festival tradition began in 1869, when Johann Voldemar Jannsen organized the first festival under Russian rule. Singing became a public expression of Estonian identity. The first stage on this site opened in 1928; the present arched stage, designed by Alar Kotli, was built in 1959 and first used for the 1960 festival. Its shape makes the scale of the tradition clear even when the grounds are empty: thousands of singers can gather beneath the arc. In 1988, mass singing here became part of the movement remembered as the Singing Revolution, which helped lead to Estonia's restored independence. The grounds have also hosted other large concerts, but the choir stage is the feature that gives the place its distinctive meaning. The Gustav Ernesaks monument and the hillside view over Tallinn Bay add two quieter ways to understand the site between major events.

Useful to know

  • Walk up the slope to the Aste pavilion for a wider view of the grounds and bay.
  • Check event notices before visiting, since setup or performances can limit access.
