Tbilisi stretches along the Mtkvari valley, where old districts, nineteenth-century avenues, Soviet planning and steep green ridges meet within a compact but uneven center.
Understanding the valley explains why the city changes so quickly from one block to the next. Old Tbilisi and Abanotubani occupy the river bends, Rustaveli Avenue follows a more formal civic axis, and Avlabari climbs sharply opposite Narikala. Use those areas as planning clusters instead of assuming every central landmark belongs to one flat walk.
