Choosing transport across Thailand
Long journeys in Thailand can involve domestic flights, trains and several classes of intercity bus. The best choice depends on distance, stops and onboard comfort rather than the transport label alone.
On a journey from Bangkok toward northern Thailand, a flight preserves more time at the destination, while a train or intercity bus makes the overland passage part of the trip. Thailand's bus classes suggest different comfort levels, but seat layout, stopping pattern and onboard facilities vary. That matters on longer journeys across the country. Choose based on whether you value time at the destination, the ground-level passage between regions, or comfort during the ride.
Useful to know
Compare the complete travel time of a domestic flight with the overland route, including transfers.
For a long bus journey, check stops, seat type and whether there is an onboard toilet.
Use the current operator timetable and fare for the exact route; old carrier names and prices are unreliable.
