From the Thailand World / Stories
Thailand's regional communities and languages
Thailand's regional identities are easier to notice through language than through a single national label. Isan, the central region and the south each bring different speech and cultural influences to a journey.
In Isan, many people speak a language closely related to Lao; central Thai is the language used in education and administration, and Southern Thai is another distinct variety. Knowing those differences makes a trip across regions more legible and helps explain why local names and speech may change along the way.
