Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai
At the heart of Sukhothai Historical Park, Wat Mahathat gathers a lotus-bud chedi and surrounding stone prangs into a formal ruin. Its design is a clear expression of Sukhothai style.
Why go
The temple is a useful place to slow down during a broader park visit. From different sides, the central chedi and surrounding towers form changing alignments that reveal the care in the original plan. The site also helps explain why this city gave its name to a distinctive era of Thai architecture and Buddhist sculpture.
