Permanent Court of Arbitration

The Permanent Court of Arbitration links the Peace Palace to the first Hague Peace Conference and to a form of dispute resolution distinct from criminal prosecution.

Why go

Established in 1899, the PCA provides a framework and administrative support for arbitration rather than acting as a single standing bench of judges. Its cases can concern borders, maritime claims, investment and trade. The Peace Palace was built for it in 1913 and also houses the separate International Court of Justice. Understanding that distinction gives the building more meaning from outside, without assuming access to the institution itself.
